Yes!
Infact you could make RS232 cable from ordinary cables like s-video cable with minimal effort. Most of the recivers here in ethiopia do not implement the whole specification of the standard. i.e you only need three wires(Ground, TXD and RXD). TXD is for transmit and RXD is for recive. You don't need the other pins as the data flow could be controled by software using control signals over this data cables(txd and rxd).
There are TWO types of connection though, STRAIGHT AND CROSSED.
In STRAIGHT connection 5<->5, 2<->2 and 3<->3
In CROSSED connection 5<->5, 2<->3 and 3<->2
Crossed rs232 cable is normally called NULL modem cable. If your reciver has a male RS232 port, there is a big chance that it uses crossed connection and if it is a female prt it most likely uses straight cable.
also know that the pin numbering goes from left to right for male port and the opposite for female port.
However usb to rs232 cable canot be home made as it is not just wires, it is an adapter with itsown hardware and also needs specially made drivers.
I myself home made an RS232 cable from a cheap s-video cable and it works great. I just removed the ends first, then prepared 6 pieces of small cable covers to be used as female socket.
If it is not clear I can provide a detailed description with pictures.
